The Okavango

Locals and veterans of the Okavango shake their heads in wonder at the amount of water this year. Great rains, a good flood from Angola, have pushed water levels so high that you can take boat trips from Maun right into the heart of the Delta. The “Stolen Channel” - the legendary Savute channel which has been dry for decades - is now flowing strongly  and even the big lion prides have learnt to swim. Outside Orient Express’ Savute Elephant Camp, hundreds of elephants used to drink from one small trough, hustling, bustling, patiently waiting their turn, the big old bulls often letting the mothers and babies drink first. Today, that trough is in the middle of a big river - it’s elephant heaven. Have a look at the picture and you can see that trough in the middle of the river.
